About the Item

A late 19th-century Chinese storage cabinet crafted from elm and enlivened by richly figured burl wood panels. Tall and relatively shallow, the cabinet combines generous storage with a strong architectural presence, making it particularly useful where floor space is limited. The façade is arranged in two sections. A large pair of upper doors opens to an interior fitted with two fixed shelves and two drawers, each finished with a small ring pull. A second pair of doors below provides an additional enclosed compartment. Framed burl panels introduce depth and variation to the warm honey-brown wood, while the darker interior creates a handsome tonal contrast. Substantial patinated brass hardware defines the exterior, including large circular lock plates, decorative drop pulls and multiple round hinges. These dark metal elements emphasize the cabinet’s symmetry and give it the commanding character associated with traditional Chinese furniture. Raised on straight legs joined by side stretchers, the cabinet retains a visually open base despite its considerable storage capacity. Its combination of shelving, drawers and enclosed compartments would make it a practical linen, media or general storage cabinet in either a traditional or contemporary interior.
