About the Item

Cabinet Attributed to Hans J. Holm, Denmark, ca. 1870–1890 Cabinet of architectural two-part form in mahogany, the upper section with a bold stepped cornice above a frieze inlaid with swans and foliate scrolls on an ebonised ground, the pair of doors richly decorated with marquetry panels depicting flowering plants, tulips and birds against a dark ground, flanked by ebonised pilasters with further inlaid ornament; the lower section raised on tapering square legs united by a platform stretcher, the whole with ebonised mouldings and inlaid panels of seahorses and wave-form friezes throughout. Attributed to the architect Hans J. Holm (1835–1916), whose work is rooted in Historicism and characterised by an architectonic approach balancing richly ornamental surfaces with structural clarity. A group of chairs with closely related ornamentation, made for the private residence of Ottilia and Carl Jacobsen, was conclusively identified as the work of Holm by Mirjam Gelfer-Jørgensen in Møbler med mening (2009). The present cabinet may originally have belonged to the same distinguished collection. In the tension between structural discipline and exuberant surface decoration, the piece reflects a pivotal moment in Danish design history, where naturalistic ornament anticipates the expressive ideals of the emerging Skønvirke movement. The cabinet retains its two original keys. Measurements: Height: 145 cm (57.1 in) Width: 78 cm (30.7 in) Depth: 45 cm (17.7 in) The cabinet is in good original condition throughout.
