About the Item

From Daigo, Ibaraki pref., Japan. Antique dougu tansu, tool chest of drawers made of Yamizo Sugi cedar made in the year 1886 (Meiji 19). "Yamizo Sugi" is a premium quality Sugi cedar from Mt Yamizo, located at the town of Daigo. The drawer fronts are cut from a single, solid wood panel, which means the grains are connected. 9 deep drawers have good storage capacity. It's still durable enough for actual use, and each drawers open & close smoothly. There's a note on the back panel - "Meiji 19 the 2nd month", "Daigo Store opening", "The creator carpenter Sakichi", "Mikawa". (Some characters are indecipherable) From this note, it seems to be made as one of the shop chests for new store opening at Daigo, and "Mikawa" can be a shop name or owner's name. Made by the carpenter probably who was in charge of the store construction. Just a simple store furniture got a nice wabi sabi touch by age nearly 140 years.
