About the Item

An Exceptional French Louis XVI Revival Marquetry Commode, Attributed to Maison Krieger, Paris, Circa 1880 This exceptional Louis XVI Revival commode, attributed to the renowned Parisian cabinetmaking firm Maison Krieger, is crowned with a richly figured Breccia marble top above a finely proportioned case of remarkable elegance. The façade is centered by a superb floral marquetry panel depicting an overflowing classical urn filled with blooming flowers, meticulously executed in a variety of finely selected fruitwoods against a dramatic dark ground. Flanking the central reserve are geometric parquetry panels framed by satinwood banding and kingwood veneers, while the frieze, apron, and corner pilasters are lavishly mounted with finely chased and mercury-gilt bronze ornament including rosettes, guilloche, scrolling acanthus, floral swags, and classical foliate motifs. Fluted corner stiles terminate in elegant tapering spiral feet, creating a harmonious architectural composition inspired by the masterpieces of the late eighteenth century. The cabinet reflects the extraordinary level of craftsmanship achieved by the great Parisian ébénistes during the final decades of the nineteenth century, when firms such as Maison Krieger revived the finest traditions of Louis XVI furniture for an international clientele. The richly colored floral marquetry demonstrates a masterful understanding of wood selection, employing naturally varied veneers to achieve remarkable depth, shading, and botanical realism, while the contrasting parquetry panels provide a refined geometric counterpoint. The design recalls the celebrated furniture of Jean-Henri Riesener, cabinetmaker to Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, whose elegant compositions served as the principal inspiration for the finest Louis XVI Revival furniture produced during the Belle Époque. Founded in Paris in 1826, Maison Krieger became one of France's foremost luxury cabinetmaking firms, furnishing royal residences, aristocratic hôtels particuliers, and prestigious international exhibitions. Their furniture was admired for its impeccable cabinetmaking, exceptional gilt bronze mounts, and faithful reinterpretation of eighteenth-century royal models, qualities that made the firm's work highly sought after by collectors throughout Europe and America. Pieces of comparable quality by Maison Krieger are represented in important private collections and have appeared in leading international auctions. Executed with exceptional attention to proportion, material selection, and bronze chasing, this commode embodies the highest standards of French Louis XVI Revival craftsmanship. The richly veined Breccia marble, luminous ormolu mounts, and superb marquetry combine to create a piece of remarkable decorative presence and enduring elegance, representing one of the finest expressions of Parisian cabinetmaking during the late nineteenth century.
