About the Item

A robust and characterful wooden coffer of rectangular form, raised on a molded plinth base with shaped apron. The façade is structured with two recessed panel reserves framed by simple moldings, surmounted by a continuous band of finely carved geometric ornamentation forming a rhythmic frieze beneath the top. The hinged lid opens to reveal a spacious interior, retaining its original hand-hewn surfaces and darkened patina, indicative of age and long use. The exterior displays a rich, warm brown tone with visible grain, tool marks, and traces of historic wear that contribute to its authentic rustic appeal. The construction appears in solid wood with pegged and nailed elements, consistent with traditional craftsmanship. The sides and back are more rudimentary in finish, as expected for utilitarian storage furniture of the period. Condition is commensurate with age, including surface wear, minor losses, shrinkage cracks, old repairs, and areas of wood degradation—particularly visible on the reverse and interior base—yet the structure remains stable and usable. A decorative and functional piece, well-suited as a blanket chest, storage coffer, or low occasional table, offering strong presence and genuine period character.
