About the Item

Antique Japanese Tansu box chest of drawer, product of late Edo to early Meiji era (estimate 1850s-1900s). As showed in the paper labels remains on each drawer faces, This is used by the woodworking craftsman called Sashimono-shi, made to organize and carry the smaller tools for wood curving. The main material is Sugi Cedar, and the Inside of drawer boxes are fully Urushi lacquered and preserved very well. It is believed to have been used for storing delicate metallic tools - such as, smaller curving knives, thin gimlets and specialized tools, likely wrapped in cloth. It may explain the unusually well-preserved interior condition. Interestingly, one of the drawers is for "Western-style small knives", written in a paper label. Anything from the West / influenced by the West, were rare and pricey in this era (even in 1900s), I guess those knives were treated very well by the owner together with other tools. At the first glance, this is just a box chest of drawers with long and thin shape - but once again with these historical & cultural backgrounds, this will be an unique wabi sabi piece. Smooth opening & closing operation on all drawers. Made with traditional wood joinery.
