About the Item

Period 18th century Rococo dresser with white, beveled marble-top and brass hardware by Mathias Ortmann. Furniture by M. Ortmann urniture is of exceptional quality and represent the finest in Northern European Baroque and Rococo furniture. Ortmann's name became immortalized for posterity and has ever since been a sought-after but rarely offered collectible. Mathias Ortmann (circa 1700-1757) was born in Sweden as "møbelsnedkersøn", son of a furniture maker. The family moved to Copenhagen to open a workshop in Nyhavn. Mathias Ortmann took an early apprenticeship at his father's fast-growing workshop, that included furniture to Danish King Frederik IV's brother Prince Carl mansion at Charlottenborg. The mother continued the workshop after his father's death in 1723 and two years later Mathias Ortmann became master and obtained citizenship in 1727 as a cabinetmaker. On educational travel in Europe, mainly in France's Louis XV period, Ortmann learned of the advantages of signing his furniture. However, it is not all Ortmann furniture that carries the coveted signature. Ortmann's famous label was used only during the period 1745-1757, and a large part of his production was made before and after that short period. The hallmark of the Ortmann style within case pieces is an inspiration from his travels in 18th century France, but the style is not only French. The furniture has local features that are known only from Schleswig-Holstein and Copenhagen. Early Ortmann dressers are straight-sided, where later models develops the bombé-shaped model with gilded and carved pedestal and legs. For the typical Ortmann appearance is also gilded drawer edges and a gilded plaster frieze with light intersections during the gilded upper edge. This golden ribbon is positioned immediately below the marble plate, which covers the label. This frieze does not occur on French commodes, but are of Scandinavian origin.
