About the Item

LOUIS XV STYLE GREEN-PAINTED CHINOISERIE MARBLE TOP COMMODE Probably French, late 19th to early 20th century 34 3/8" H x 17" D x 34 5/8" W Executed in the Louis XV taste, this finely decorated two-drawer commode features a gently serpentine front with two full-width drawers framed by gilt-bronze mounts and a richly veined marble top. The surface is painted in deep green lacquer and embellished throughout with gilt chinoiserie scenes depicting figures within stylized landscapes, the sides ornamented with floral urns in complementary tones of gold and ochre. The drawers are hand-dovetailed and constructed with oak secondary wood, retaining one original key. The gilt-bronze mounts are crisply cast, including foliate sabots, scroll corner mounts, and a central wreath with ribbon cresting and pendant ornament. The quality of the painted decoration and giltwork aligns with Parisian workshop production of the late 19th century, when cabinetmakers sought to reinterpret 18th-century forms with vibrant lacquer finishes and exotic motifs inspired by the chinoiserie revival. Condition: Very good overall condition with scattered craquelure and losses to the paint, inpainting throughout; discolored shellac throughout; minor surface wear, and light rubbing to ormolu. Marble top with faint scratches and natural inclusions consistent with age. Drawers move in and out without difficulty. Includes original key. GUSTAVIAN MAHOGANY SECRÉTAIRE À ABATTANT WITH MARBLE TOP Sweden, circa 1790 34 3/16" H x 17 3/4" D x 36 1/8" W Writing area: 13 1/4" D x 30" W x 26 3/8" from floor to underside of writing area A finely crafted mahogany chest of drawers surmounted by a green-teal marble top. The uppermost drawer functions as a fall-front secretaire, the hinged front panel opening to reveal a fitted interior with multiple small drawers and compartments arranged around a central recess. The interior is polished mahogany with turned brass knobs and hand-cut dovetail joinery throughout. The two lower drawers provide additional storage, each mounted with circular brass pulls and brass key escutcheons. The case is outlined with applied brass edging, the drawers framed in applied brass cockbead moldings, the fluted corner stiles terminating in tapered legs with inset brass fluting below applied triangular brass mounts. While the form reflects the Neoclassical aesthetic common throughout Northern Europe in the late 18th and early 19th century, the restrained ornamentation, lightness of proportion and use of gilt-brass accents are particularly characteristic of Swedish Empire furniture...
