Italian Louis XV Roman Bombe-Shaped Commode with Original Marble Top Circa 1730 This exceptional Italian Louis XV commode of Roman origin is executed in the elegant bombé form characteristic of early 18th-century craftsmanship. It is veneered in precious woods—including maple, walnut, and burl walnut—arranged in intricate inlays that highlight the curving lines of the case. The serpentine Siena yellow marble top is original and conforms perfectly to the sinuous outline of the commode below. The bombé case features a frieze drawer above two larger drawers sans traverse (without a dividing crossbar), emphasizing the continuous flowing front. The whole rests on curved sabre legs terminating in turned and carved giltwood feet, further embellished with stylized acanthus-form ormolu mounts at the corners and feet. This piece exemplifies the refined opulence of Roman cabinetmaking during the Louis XV period, merging French Rococo elegance with the luxurious materials and craftsmanship of Italian design.
