About the Item

A wonderfully authentic late 18th to early 19th century English brass-bound campaign chest raised on a later custom stand, retaining its original engraved brass plaque reading “Capt. J.P. D’Estere No. 1.” Constructed in richly patinated oak, the chest is reinforced throughout with substantial brass corner mounts and carrying straps — practical features designed to withstand the rigors of military or maritime travel during the Georgian period. The solid plank construction, inset brass escutcheon, and side carrying handles all speak to its utilitarian origins and enduring craftsmanship. The interior retains remnants of its original patterned paper lining, while the exterior has developed a deeply oxidized surface and untouched character acquired over centuries of use. Particularly appealing is the engraved ownership plaque, suggesting the chest once formed part of a larger suite of traveling equipage belonging to Captain J.P. D’Estere. Raised on a later but sympathetic stand, the piece functions beautifully today as a side table, bedside chest, or distinctive storage piece while preserving its historic integrity. An evocative and highly decorative example of Georgian campaign furniture with exceptional presence and genuine lived history. Circa 1780–1820.
