About the Item

A substantial solid oak six-drawer chest in the Danish Country Modern tradition, with a richly figured grain, hand-forged iron ring pulls, and decorative keyhole escutcheons — an exceptional example of the regional Danish cabinetmaking that flourished alongside the more widely exported modernist movement of the 1960s. The piece is low and wide in its proportions, with a generously overhanging top finished with a softly rounded edge. The facade is arranged as two banks of three drawers, each fitted with forged iron ring pulls of the twisted-band type — a detail that speaks directly to the vernacular craft tradition rather than the industrial. The top drawer of each bank carries an ornate cross-shaped escutcheon with an original skeleton key, adding a rare and highly decorative touch. The scalloped apron runs the full width of the piece and transitions into four chamfered, faceted legs — a structural and aesthetic signature seen in the work of Henning Kjærnulf and his contemporaries at Danish regional workshops. The drawer interiors are clean solid oak throughout, with smooth action consistent with quality period construction.
