About the Item

A rare and exceptional pair of Italian Rococo polychrome-painted commodes in the Venetian tradition, dating to the mid-to-late 18th century — almost certainly originating from the Veneto region, circa 1740–1780. Offered together for the first time on the market in decades, having passed directly from a distinguished Northern California private collection to the present owner. Each commode presents the exuberant commode a serpentina form characteristic of the Venetian Rococo at its height — a dramatically undulating, multi-lobed serpentine front with pronounced bombé body, deeply scalloped apron, and elegantly sweeping cabriole legs terminating in carved scroll feet. The corner pilasters are articulated with carved figural drops, a detail strongly associated with Venetian case furniture of the Settecento. Construction throughout is of hand-worked softwood — the unfinished backs reveal wide-plank boards with hand-cut saw marks, period nail patterns, and the accumulated patina of centuries of use, entirely consistent with 18th-century Venetian workshop practice. The painted surface is executed in the lacca povera manner — Venice's celebrated answer to Asian lacquerwork — with a richly saturated saffron-yellow ochre ground overlaid with hand-painted polychrome floral bouquets of roses, daisies, and mixed garden flowers rendered in red, pink, blue, and green, accented by scrolling red strapwork and cartouche surrounds. The decoration extends to all surfaces: drawer fronts, sides, apron, and tops — each top centered by a generous floral spray on the ochre ground. The craquelure network across all painted surfaces is deep, consistent, and entirely characteristic of aged 18th-century lacca — not artificially distressed. An old linen inventory tag remains adhered to the back of one piece, suggestive of prior passage through a significant collection or estate. Original iron bail pulls with shaped back-plates remain on both commodes. The escutcheons retain their original character. No replacement hardware. Both commodes present with honest, unrestored patina appropriate to their age. The painted surfaces show areas of wear and paint loss — most notably across the tops — consistent with centuries of use and entirely expected in genuine 18th-century lacca povera. The painted decoration on the drawer fronts and sides retains remarkable vibrancy. Minor structural crack to molding on one piece; structurally sound overall. No cosmetic restoration has been applied — the pieces are offered in authentic, unconserved condition, which is the preferred presentation for serious collectors of Italian Baroque and Rococo furniture.
