About the Item

While the corner cabinet was a clever 18th-century response to tight dining spaces, this one made of knotty pine is both a practical and handsome answer. On the utility side, as a corner cabinet it yields maximum storage in an otherwise empty area of a room. Although very much 18th-century in inspiration, it was made the 20th, which means that it’s sturdy, not warped and happily wormwood free. It also comes in two pieces, easier to move about as we no longer remain on our land for generations. The top has a multi-pane glass- and wood door, with two shelves. It’s ideal for displaying attractive glassware for dinner or cocktails. There are three cutlery or bar tool drawers directly below. The bottom with a single door has one shelf, perfect for one’s libation bottles or stacked plates and serve ware. It even comes with its original keys—especially handy for bars. However, this piece rises beyond the mere practical. Starting at the top, the design features a stepped cornice with a sharp dentil molding—those small, evenly spaced rectangular blocks that resemble a row of teeth. Further adding architectural elegance to the upper portion of the display cabinet are the pair of stepped-up cutouts for the top windowpanes. A central straight piece is flanked by two smaller inset curves toward the corners. The ordinary cabinet maker would have just cut straight across. Notice the reeded columns that trim and visually connect the top and bottom’s slender sides down to the stepped molded base. Lastly, take note of the details that only you will see, for example how each shelf, both top and bottom, presents a graceful scallop finish in harmony with the trim presented when you open the lower unit’s solid paneled door. Clearly, care and even love went into the creation of this piece. Maker’s mark: nonexistent
