About the Item

An opulent 19th century French Napoleon III (nephew of Bonaparte I) style commode, with Boulle style red-orange tortoiseshell and brass marquetry, ormolu detailing and marble top. The front features three highly decorative doors with panels of intricate inlaid Bérainesque grotesques, following the distinct style of French cabinetmaker Nicolas Sageot. The detailed and interconnected designs include figures of humans and animals, insects, griffins, sphinxes... and fiddle-playing monkeys! All three doors open to reveal a rich dark wood interior with matching adjustable shelves. The door locks function and keys are included. The design, craftsmanship and materials are outstanding, and this is a museum-level example of 19th century French furniture-making. There has been an attempt to fill or cover a vertical crack on one side of the cabinet with a slightly off-color paint (see photo), otherwise the commode is in very good condition, and structurally sound. This item contains tortoiseshell which is subject to international endangered species treaties (CITES), depending on final destination specialized paperwork may be needed, causing shipping times to be longer than usual.
