About the Item

Brass-Bound Rosewood Campaign Writing Slope Lap Desk, English, Circa 1860 This brass-bound campaign writing slope, of the kind carried by military and naval officers and gentleman travelers through the nineteenth century, is constructed in well-figured rosewood with brass-bound edges, brass corner brackets, and a brass strap across the lid, the cover centered by a brass star-form inlay. Flush brass campaign handles are recessed to each side for carrying. The hinged interior opens to a sloped writing surface lined in gilt-tooled black leather; lifting the leather panels reveals storage wells for paper beneath, while a fitted tray along the top is divided into five compartments, three of them lidded, for inkwell, pens, and accessories. A concealed drawer in the side, fitted with its own flush brass handle, is released by a sliding catch within the interior. The brass-bound writing slope was an essential possession of the nineteenth-century traveler. Reinforced at every edge and corner with brass and fitted with recessed campaign handles, boxes of this type were built to withstand the rigors of military campaign, colonial service, and life at sea, and were carried by army and naval officers and gentleman travelers alike. Opened flat, the box became a sloped writing desk complete with inkwell, pens, and paper, while the concealed drawer, a near-standard feature, provided for the safekeeping of money and valuable correspondence far from home. It remains entirely usable, and is as good on a desk or a library table today as it was in a cabin or a tent, holding letters, papers, and small things behind a lock.
