About the Item

A fine quality 19th century London made burr ash desk circa 1870 made by R Taylor and Sons, who traded from 97 New Bond Street, London and just a few steps away from John Johnstone and Robert Jupe, and of George Oakley who traded from 67 New Bond Street. Stamped to inner top face of the frieze drawers and door, B Taylor and Sons, 97 New Bond Street, London and confirmed by London directories as at this address in 1850 and in 1871 successfully trading for decades alongside the finest British cabinet makers of the age. All of the drawers open smoothly and close properly and retain their original turned handles, solid mahogany linings - in sound and clean condition - and the original VR patent brass locks throughout. The central kneehole door also stamped for Taylor and sons and opening to a mahogany interior with fixed central shelf. The lovely serpentine shape with over-sailing top allows plenty of leg room, the writing surface is at a good height to work and the desk is very comfortable to sit at. The deep green leather skiver is in good condition also, well fitted with no tears or weakness, and with an attractive and elaborate embossed and gold tooled border. The desk is extremely heavy and well made with fine quality detailing throughout including a carved shaped border to the central curved drawer which retains the original partitions, four flanking turned columns in ash wood and all on a wide burr ash plinth base. Beech framed and fielded panel back - always a sign of high quality when something that is not designed to be seen is so finely finished. Possibly an exhibition piece, certainly a piece designed to demonstrate the cabinet makers skill and refinement and in a most unusual and rare wood. A lovely example. Dimensions are: 57 inches wide, 28 inches deep and 30.5 inches high. The kneehole is 19 inches wide and 24.5 inches high. The desk surface lifts off the pedestal section for ease of transport. For metric please multiply by 2.5.
