About the Item

French Louis Philippe Mahogany Rafraîchissoir Wine Table with Slate Top and Brass Gallery French Louis Philippe Mahogany Rafraîchissoir Wine Table with Slate Top and Brass Gallery. This elegant Louis Philippe-period wine table, or rafraîchissoir, is a remarkably practical and sophisticated diminutive case piece dating to the mid-19th century. Designed for entertaining, it combines generous serving space with integrated wine storage in a compact footprint, making it equally suitable today as a bar cabinet, drinks station, or side table. Crafted from richly figured solid mahogany with a warm reddish-brown patina, the table stands on elegantly turned tapering legs supporting two full-width open shelves. The restrained Louis Philippe silhouette emphasizes proportion and utility rather than excessive ornament, while the pierced brass gallery surrounding the top introduces a refined neoclassical accent, preventing glassware and serving pieces from sliding while framing the handsome slate work surface. The original slate inset provides a durable, naturally cool preparation surface ideal for decanting wine, mixing cocktails, or serving cheeses and hors d'oeuvres. Along one edge are three deeply recessed bottle wells, each sized to securely cradle a standard wine or champagne bottle. The circular wells descend approximately six inches below the surface, helping stabilize bottles during service while recalling the original purpose of a rafraîchissoir—to hold chilled bottles close at hand, often surrounded by cool water or ice in earlier examples. A long frieze drawer spans nearly the entire width of the cabinet, providing convenient storage for corkscrews, coasters, linens, bar tools, or serving utensils. The two open shelves below offer generous space for decanters, bottles, stemware, books, or baskets, making this an exceptionally functional serving piece without sacrificing elegance. Unlike many 19th-century wine tables that devote most of their surface to bottle recesses, this example is distinguished by its unusually expansive slate workspace, giving it exceptional versatility for modern entertaining while preserving its historic function.
