About the Item

A finely carved French Louis XVI period slant-front secretary desk, crafted in natural oak in the Liège region during the late 18th century. This elegant secrétaire à abattant displays the restrained symmetry characteristic of the Louis XVI style, enriched by beautifully executed hand-carved ornament. The fall-front is centered by a finely carved basket overflowing with flowers, tied with a ribbon and framed by delicate olive branches, a refined neoclassical motif repeated throughout the piece. Below, three graduated drawers are adorned with carved floral scrolls and retain their original decorative brass escutcheons and pulls. Fluted front uprights emphasize the classical architectural influence, while the molded base and clean lines provide balanced proportions. The slant-front opens to reveal a practical writing surface with an interior fitted for correspondence and personal storage, making this piece equally suited as a functional desk or statement cabinet. Rich patina, warm oak tones, and crisp hand-carved details reflect the exceptional craftsmanship associated with furniture from the Liège region.
