About the Item

An exceptional English George III period mahogany bureau bookcase, circa 1790. This classic two-body secretary features a slender, well-proportioned silhouette. This versatile piece functions as both a desk and storage. This piece breaks down into three pieces for easy moving. The upper section is crowned with a traditional molded cornice above two astral-glazed doors. The doors retain their original diamond-pattern glazing bars, opening to reveal a spacious three-shelf interior currently housing a collection of fine bindings. The lower bureau section features a fall-front desk that opens to a beautifully appointed interior. It contains a central "tabernacle" door flanked by vertical document pigeonholes and five small stationery drawers with delicate brass pulls. The writing surface is inset with a characterful, aged sage-green leather "skiver" with gold-tooled borders. Below the desk, the chest contains two short drawers over two long, graduated drawers, all supported by traditional bracket feet. The piece is dressed with ornate George III style brass "batwing" bail handles and escutcheons that have developed a wonderful muted patina over two centuries. Constructed with notable hand-cut dovetail joinery on the drawers and a solid wood back (as shown in detail photos), confirming its period authenticity. The mahogany possesses a deep, rich color and original grain. The leather writing surface shows authentic distressing and "crazing," adding to its historic charm.
