About the Item

A masterful bureau cabinet / secretary made in Copenhagen around 1745, constructed in walnut. The tall piece is crowned by an elaborately carved and gilded broken pediment with a central ornamental crest and scrolling foliage. Below are two cupboard doors framed with fine brass stringing and fitted with a central gilt-bronze keyhole escutcheon. The fall-front writing surface opens to reveal the interior, while the lower section contains a series of serpentine drawers fitted with the original gilt-bronze handles and mounts. The cabinet stands on cabriole legs enriched with further carved and gilded ornament. The carved golden decorations and the original gilt bronze mounts remain in place. The piece is probably from the workshop of Matthias Ortmann (1692–1757). Dimensions: Height 281 cm × Width 120 cm × Depth 60 cm
