Charming French Carved Oak Etagere Wall Shelf, circa 1850

Known in France as an étagère, this wall shelf was hand carved from oak in France, circa 1850. The three shelves vary in depth from 4 ¼” to 5 ½” and are flanked by sinuous corbels adorned with fluted chevrons on the façade. Embellishments on the side of the corbels include fluting, roundels, and trefoils resembling fleur de lys. All three of these are common themes, also appearing on delicate carvings that hang under the shelves, as well as on the highly shaped crown. Other motifs include lozenge patterned roundels (resembling sunflowers) and curled leaves on the crown, plus winged mythical creatures beneath the middle shelf.
