About the Item

Attributed to William Watting for Fristho, this two-bay modular wall unit is built around three cylindrical teak upright posts that run floor to ceiling, supporting four adjustable shelves on metal brackets. The left bay houses a drop-front bar cabinet finished with a formica top and a glass interior shelf. The right bay holds a larger storage cabinet — This cabinet has a wood-shelved compartment on the left with 2 cubbies, and two drawers above a small drop-front cabinet. Throughout, the hardware is distinctive: tapered brass knobs centered within a raised round teak target motif that appears on every door and drawer front. Fristho was a Dutch furniture manufacturer based in Franeker, Netherlands, active from the 1950s through the 1970s. The company produced Mid-Century teak furniture with an emphasis on modular and functional design, often distributed across Northern Europe. Watting's work for Fristho is recognized in part through this signature target-motif hardware, which appears consistently across attributed pieces. The unit has been lightly refinished and shows wear consistent with age and use. Fristho — short for Friesche Houtindustrie — operated out of Franeker in the Netherlands and was among the Dutch manufacturers that embraced modular teak furniture during the postwar decades. The company produced storage systems, sideboards, and bedroom furniture that reflected both Scandinavian influence and a practical Dutch sensibility around functional, adaptable design. William Watting designed for Fristho during the 1960s, and his work is identifiable in part through the target motif hardware seen on this unit — a raised circular teak surround framing a tapered knob. The two-bay wall system format was a hallmark of the era, offering reconfigurable storage that could be expanded or rearranged as needs changed. Fristho pieces, particularly those attributed to Watting, have seen growing collector interest as Dutch Mid-Century Modern furniture receives broader international recognition.
