About the Item

Acquired in Saitama prefecture, Japan's Kanto region, this Mizuya Tansu chest has been used to store the tableware & kitchen tools in ordinal households, dating back to the late Edo period, circa 1840s–1860s. Made of quality solid Sugi Cedar, having good storage capacity with inner shelves. The structural frames of the main unit & lattice sliding doors are made of the thick lumbers with traditional joinery without metal fasteners. A warm black color with a slight reddish hue comes from the layers of urushi lacquer, persimmon tannin (kakishibu), and burnt pine ink. Surviving through more than a century, It's still durable enough for deily use. Doors & drawers open & close smoothly. Dimensions: H 33.9 × W 67.2 × D 23.9 in (H 860 × W 1708 × D 606 mm) Inner Shelves: 1: H 15.6 × W 64.8 × D 18.1 in (H 395 × W 1646 × D 460 mm) 2: H 14.2 / 15.6* × W 64.8 × D 20.7 in (H 360 / 395* × W 1646 × D 525 mm) * The front edge of the shelf board is fitted with a frame. Therefore, for approximately the first 1.0 in (25 mm) from the front, the clearance is H 14.2 in (H 360 mm), while the rear interior height is H 15.6 in (H 395 mm).
