About the Item

A hand carved solid oak sideboard by French designer Charles Dudouyt, produced in France in the 1940s. Dudouyt (1885-1946) began his career as an illustrator before turning to furniture design after World War I, establishing his Paris workshop La Gentilhommière in 1933 and becoming one of the defining figures of French Art Deco furniture. This sideboard demonstrates the full range of his carving vocabulary. The two outer cabinet doors are carved with deep concentric circular medallions, one of the most recurring motifs across his case work, while the three central drawers are framed by carved raised panel borders and fitted with simple horizontal bar pulls. The piece sits on a set of scroll feet, a detail that grounds the composition and adds a further layer of sculptural relief to the base. Carved column pilasters separate the outer cabinets from the central drawer bank, giving the piece a tripartite structure typical of Dudouyt's larger storage pieces. Solid oak throughout with original dark finish intact. Dimensions: 78.5 inches long by 22 inches wide by 40.5 inches tall.
