About the Item

A beautifully weathered Chinese painted sideboard featuring a long rectangular form and a richly aged red lacquer surface. The front is composed of three doors, each decorated with hand-painted scenes that have aged gracefully over time. The central panel depicts a traditional mountain landscape, while the flanking panels feature figures set within architectural and garden settings. Along the lower register, delicate painted motifs of branches, foliage, and birds add further decorative detail. Storage trunks of this type were once used throughout China for the safekeeping of clothing, textiles, and household valuables. The red lacquer finish—symbolic of good fortune and prosperity—has developed a rich and dark patina, with areas of wear that reveal the character and age of the piece. Today, the coffer serves beautifully as a media console beneath a television or painting, and its shallow depth also allows it to sit comfortably in a hallway or entry space.
