About the Item

French workshop, three door sideboard, solid oak, France, 1940s. A carved scalloped frieze runs the full width of the case, above panels worked with stylised flowers, foliage and reeded bars. The oak is pale and open grained, with a natural finish that keeps the ray fleck visible across the top and door fronts. Construction is solid throughout: fielded panels set into a mortise and tenon frame, a moulded overhanging top, and a shaped sled base whose curved feet are joined by two turned wooden elements at the centre. Small brass escutcheons are the only metal on the front. Pieces of this type came out of French provincial workshops in the years after the war, when cabinetmakers combined Art Deco geometry with the carving vocabulary of regional furniture. The proportions suit a dining room or a long hallway, and the interior holds shelving behind each door. Condition is good, with wear consistent with age and use and the original surface preserved.
