About the Item

The sideboard, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto in the 1970s, is a refined example of Italian modern design, combining architectural clarity, luxurious materials, and outstanding craftsmanship. Inspired in the celebrated Artona series, the piece reflects the Scarpa duo’s sophisticated approach to furniture design, where structure, proportion, and material richness are brought together with remarkable elegance. The sideboard is executed in walnut, whose warm tone and expressive grain provide a rich natural contrast to the black lacquered panels that define the front composition. The alternation between wood and lacquer creates a strong graphic presence, while maintaining the understated sophistication characteristic of Maxalto’s finest productions from this period. The central section features a series of drawers framed in walnut and finished with black lacquered fronts, offering both visual rhythm and practical storage. The surrounding cabinet doors continue the same refined language, with large black panels bordered by beautifully grained walnut. Subtle brass details enrich the design, adding discreet points of light and emphasizing the piece’s luxurious character without excess. With its long, low profile and precise architectural composition, this sideboard is both functional and sculptural. It can serve as an elegant storage piece in a dining room, living room, or gallery-like interior, bringing a strong yet refined presence to the space. More than a storage cabinet, this Artona sideboard is a statement piece of 1970s Italian design, where craftsmanship, material contrast, and formal balance converge in a timeless composition.
