About the Item

J.A.D.A Galerie present: Spanish regional workshop, four-door buffet, solid oak, Spain, 1940s. A piece of considerable scale, this buffet combines two sources of visual energy: the exuberant baroque acanthus carving on its outer panels and the monumental sphere feet that lift it from the floor. The carving occupies the left and right outer stile panels as well as the carved fields flanking the four doors, filling each surface with a dense, deeply undercut composition of scrolling acanthus leaves, swirling spirals and curling terminals. The relief is cut with real depth, the leaves overlapping and curling back on themselves in a rhythm that is entirely baroque in spirit, rooted in the Spanish regional woodcarving tradition that kept this vocabulary alive well into the twentieth century. The four doors are arranged in two pairs, each door carrying a single raised rectangular panel, plain and moulded in contrast to the carved fields beside it. The alternation between plain and carved surfaces is deliberate, giving the full front face of the buffet a composed, architecturally structured rhythm. Between the two pairs of doors and at the outer edges, the carved stile panels provide the ornamental counterpoint. The feet are among the most singular features: four large turned oak spheres, each ball sitting on its own flat cross-shaped plinth connected by a low stretcher, an arrangement that gives the piece both mass and unexpected lightness, as if the heavy rectangular carcase is being offered forward on open palms. The cornice is strongly stepped and moulded, adding presence to the upper profile. The interior is fitted with two fixed shelves. In solid natural oak throughout, the wood aged to a warm honey tone with visible open grain. A buffet of commanding presence and genuine craft, in good antique condition.
