About the Item

J.A.D.A Galerie presents: A small oak cabinet made in France around 1950, in the vocabulary Charles Dudouyt brought into French cabinetmaking between the wars and went on working after it. The front corners carry heavy turned columns, ringed along their full height like stacked collars, and the same turning returns as ball feet beneath the case. Between them the piece divides in two. Above, a glazed door opens on glass shelves set against a panelled back, so light passes through the upper half. Below, a solid door carries a raised panel with a roundel of concentric rings cut into its centre, worked in the solid rather than applied. Hinges and the small escutcheon are bronze, darkened with age. The oak is left in a natural finish, pale and open in the grain, the turning catching light along its ridges. Its narrow footprint suits a hallway, the end of a dining room, or the side of a chimney breast where a full height cabinet would crowd the wall.
