About the Item

Handsome MCM aka Mid-Century Modern walnut and white laminate rolling server #3184, bar cart, serving cart, beverage cart, tea cart, or dessert cart designed by Arthur Umanoff for Cavalier Corporation’s Dimension Group. It is in wonderful vintage condition. We have restored the walnut’s finish as best can be done without totally refinishing which we did not want to do. We like whenever possible to preserve the original finish and patina. So, you may see some signs of use particularly to the lower shelf such as fluid rings and marks. There is also a small repaired chip in the walnut on the inner lip next to the laminate. We did make sure the tambor door is working properly and the white laminate looks awesome. Please see photos, circa mid-20th century. Rare. I really despise using that word because it is so over-used. But, in this case I cannot think of a better adjective for this fabulous Mid-Century Modern server #3184 designed by the famed Arthur Umanoff for Cavalier Corporation’s Dimension Group. I have seen very few of them still around. It is comprised of a beautifully sculpted walnut double shelved cart on casters with brass sabots. The handle integrated into the sides of the cart is simply stunning. And the tambor door. Wow! it opens to reveal deep storage for, I am assuming, liquor bottles etc. And then let us talk about the surprise and usability of the awesome white laminate top. This gorgeous Classic cart will grace most any room in your home. Do not just relegate it to the kitchen or dining room. Use it in your master bedroom, living room, sunroom, or study. And although Mid-Century Modern in style it will complement many design styles from Hollywood Regency to Traditional and from Modern Country to Industrial. Arthur Umanoff (1923-1985), a Pratt and American School of Design graduate, was a fabulous and prolific Mid-Century Modern and modern designer during the mid-late 20th century. He began his career in 1952 at The Elton Company. His designs include a wide range of décor items as well as furniture which focused for a time on fun bars and barstools and a variety of patio pieces in wrought iron and wood and laminates. Some of the companies he designed for include Shaver Howard, Washington Woodcraft, Howard Miller, Contemporary Shells, Cavalier Corporation, and Arleigh to name just a few. His designs are widely sought after today. Cavalier Corporation of Chattanooga, Tennessee was so named in 1938 however their roots go much further back to the Tennessee Furniture Company, a sawmill which opened in 1865, but began making furniture out of the flawed pieces of wood that would not have been sellable otherwise. Indeed, they have an interesting and unusual story. In 1905 the second owner of Tennessee Furniture Company, Gaston Raoul, purchased the Odorless Refrigeration Company which led the company into ice cooler production, and they became the largest manufacturer in the country. Then in 1923 they expanded to included cedar hope chests and soda coolers naming that line “Cavalier”. That Cavalier name is now most associated with the Coca-Cola coolers and vending machines the firm made for many years! In 1938 the company name was officially changed to Cavalier Corporation. Some of their furniture lines were designed by such greats as Gilbert Rhode in the 1930s and by Arthur Umanoff during the mid-20th century. In the 1960s they were taken over by the Seeburg Corporation, think jukeboxes, and Seeburg was subsequently taken over by a succession of companies until in 1987 they filed for bankruptcy and were spun off as an employee-owned company. This rare, yes, I said rare, and handsome cart, whether you deem it a serving cart, bar cart, drink cart, beverage cart, coffee cart, or dessert cart…needs to be yours! Arthur Umanoff

Though much of Arthur Umanoff's furniture is marked by a no-frills simplicity common in American mid-century modern design, his work is anything but one-note. Over the course of a prolific career, Umanoff designed everything from case pieces to candleholders to magazine racks to dining chairs in iron, leather, walnut, wicker and more. With furnishings for a broad range of manufacturers throughout the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s, Umanoff continued a thread of sculptural elegance and textural sensitivity through his designs.

After graduating from Pratt Institute in the early 1950s, Umanoff experimented mostly with wood furniture before landing a job at Post Modern Ltd, a New York manufacturer of wrought-iron furniture. There he produced furnishings that married wrought iron with wood and plastic, creating functional pieces free of utilitarian bulkiness.

Umanoff continued his experimentation with mixed materials through a partnership with Shaver Howard, for whom he designed wine racks in combinations of iron, leather and wicker.

When Shaver Howard bought Boyeur Scott, Umanoff conceived several furniture designs for the brand, including the 1964 Granada collection, whose curlicue iron bases, visible through glass tops, stand out as some of his most ornate and decorative work. Indeed, much of Umanoff’s oeuvre is far more simplistic, like iron-and-pine armchairs for The Elton Co. or low-backed, slatted-seat barstools with slender iron legs for Raymor.

Umanoff was fluent, too, in the more sumptuous modernism of the era: In the mid-1960s, he designed the 2405 and 4449 armchairs for Madison Furniture Industries. Popular in offices, the walnut-framed, leather-upholstered seats, which could have been mistaken for the seductive Scandinavian modern seating of the era, were reportedly the jumping-off point for Captain Kirk’s iconic seat on Star Trek.

Even as he is among the mid-century modern designers you may not know, with work across such a range of styles and manufacturers (most no longer in business), Umanoff, who died in 1985, leaves a legacy that is fascinatingly diverse and at times enticingly elusive, making his work intriguing objects for collectors.

An ideal place to set a beverage or vase of flowers. The wood has a beautiful variation of the natural tones inherent to the aspect of the wood… it is phenomenal! It also has a very useful slatted shelf below the tabletop… perfect storage for books, magazines, or maybe a tray for your remotes! Whether closed or expanded, its quintessential Scandinavian Modern design is sure to bring a bold statement with a Danish flair to any room in your home. Remploy is an organization in the United Kingdom which provides employment placement services for disabled people. Historically, it also directly employed disabled people in a number of factories owned by Remploy itself and subsidized by the UK government however, these were phased out at the start of the 21st century. It opened its first factory in 1946 and over the following decades it established a network of 83 factories across the UK making a variety of products. Remploy underwent a major change to its operation at the start of the 21st century and branched out into providing general employment assistance for disabled people, and others with barriers to employment. After the closure of most Remploy factories, the provision of these assistance services became Remploy's principal purpose.
