About the Item

Center table with writing slide in veneered wood, France, Louis XVI period, second half of the 18th century Dimensions: 50.5 cm (W) x 34 cm (D) x 76.5 cm (H). Writing surface height: 72 cm. This elegant small center table with writing slide was made in France during the Louis XVI period, in the second half of the 18th century. Conceived to stand free in the room, it is characterized by slender proportions and a refined veneer work using different wood species. The rectangular top is in Breccia d’Aleppo marble, set within a solid gilt-bronze gallery with ingot moulding that protects the edge and emphasizes the geometric outline. The front features an upper pull-out writing slide that offers a comfortable writing surface. Below, a false drawer front conceals a compartment accessible from the side, via a drawer divided into three inkwell sections that opens along the full width, designed to contain ink, pounce and small writing accessories. On the front, the lower drawer is genuine and fully functional. The structure is entirely veneered, with geometric green-wood stringing framing, on the drawer fronts and other sides, elegant central panels in bois de rose laid out in a broad herringbone pattern. The table rests on tapered, truncated-pyramidal legs, also veneered, ending in small feet and enriched at the top by gilt-bronze mounts of classical taste. A lower veneered shelf connects the legs, providing useful storage while visually lightening the overall design. Functional and of fine craftsmanship, decorative and elegant, this piece is ideal as a small center writing table in a living room or study, or placed beside armchairs and sofas, and works equally well in classical interiors and in contemporary settings as a distinctive accent piece.
