About the Item

This impressive Chinese table dates to the late 19th century and would have been at the center of every meal in the Qing-dynasty household. Crafted of purple elmwood (ziyu), the table has an unusual silhouette and features an expansive round top, three flat legs and a round lower shelf. The tabletop provided ample space for a family to gather round at mealtime and blade marks left upon the surface suggest it was also used while cooking and prepping vegetables. The flared apron is beautifully carved in low relief with geometric scrollwork, bats and six ribbon-clad objects. These precious objects are known as the "Hundred Treasures," or "Hundred Antiques," and celebrate beauty & craftsmanship in the fine arts. Among these objects are the ruyi scepter, the stone chime, the scroll, the stack of books, the game board and the qin - each representing a different virtue of the learned scholar. The three sculptural legs have a cabriole shape that curves around a spherical ball and joins with a feathered accent. The dark wood has aged beautifully from years of use and developed an expressive grain that calls to be touched.
