About the Item

Produced in Belgium during the 1960s, this coffee table pairs a hand-painted glazed ceramic tile top with a dark wood Parsons-style base. The tile surface is arranged in a grid and features two large circular motifs — rendered in dark gray and white with concentric detailing — set against a saturated red-orange ground. The composition reads as abstract art integrated directly into the functional surface. The wood frame follows a clean block-form silhouette with straight legs flush to the apron and a lower connecting stretcher rail. J. Belarti is widely understood to have been a pseudonym used by Belgian ceramic artist and designer Julien De Covemaeker, and possibly by ceramicists working within his studio. De Covemaeker's work brought a studio art sensibility to Mid-Century furniture, combining hand-crafted tile work with simple, architectural wood frames. The Belarti mark appears across a range of tile-top tables and decorative ceramics produced during this period in Belgium. The table shows wear consistent with age and use. The wood frame has been recently refinished and there has been some repair that looks very good on one of the tile corners.
