About the Item

Very rare three-piece coffee table by Robert Thibier (1926-2001) with a rectangular central section and two semi-circular sections. Tapered legs. The whole is made of gilt metal in excellent condition. The individual sections are signed with the Thibier hallmark underneath. Total span of 120cm by 47cm. Height of 39cm. The rectangular central section is 60cm long and each semi-circular table is 30cm. Born in Paris into a wealthy family, Robert Thibier (1926-2001) studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and became an interior designer in 1951. With offices located at the most prestigious addresses in Paris (Place de la Madeleine and Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré), he catered to a clientele of celebrities and socialites, including the Rothschild family, as well as athletes and industrialists. An interior designer rather than a furniture designer, Thibier produced some furniture for his clients, with the intention of creating "modern antiques" that would harmonize with other European antiques and convey a strong impression of opulence. To achieve this, he created geometric furniture in wrought iron covered with a very subtle gold leaf. Some of his pieces are signed and numbered. In the 1970s, Robert Thibier also collaborated with Maison Ramsay and created some of their most famous creations. His grave in the Montparnasse cemetery is a testament to his sense of style.
