About the Item

535 “Mug” table by Wim Rietveld for Gispen, 1950s The Netherlands. The Gispen 535, better known by collectors as the “Mug” (Mosquito) table due to the characteristic shape of its slender legs, is one of Wim Rietveld’s most recognizable post-war designs. Created during the 1950s for Gispen, the table perfectly reflects the functional and minimalist design philosophy that made Dutch modernism internationally respected. This example features a metal frame, white metal shelf and original glass top. The glass is made from drawn glass, a traditional production method in which small draw points remain visible. These two subtle marks are characteristic of the manufacturing process and contribute to the authenticity and originality of the piece rather than being considered flaws. The combination of the transparent glass top, white shelf and elegant black frame creates a light, timeless appearance that fits effortlessly into both mid-century and contemporary interiors. Its practical lower shelf also provides additional space for books or decorative objects. Wim Rietveld (1924–1985), son of the renowned architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld, became one of the leading figures in Dutch industrial design. While influenced by his father’s modernist ideals, Wim developed his own signature style, focusing on functional, affordable and intelligently engineered furniture. His designs for Gispen remain highly appreciated for their clean lines, innovative construction and lasting quality. In good vintage condition. Measurements: – Height: 48.5 cm – Diameter: 70 cm
