About the Item

An exceptional square coffee table by celebrated Dutch sculptor and designer Paul Kingma, created in the 1990s. A powerful example of Kingma’s distinctive brutalist design language, in which natural materials, sculptural composition and uncompromising craftsmanship come together. The substantial tabletop is composed as a unique geological landscape. Carefully selected pieces of slate and richly textured natural stone are embedded within a dark matrix, punctuated by subtle mineral details in turquoise and warm reddish tones. The asymmetrical composition gives the table remarkable visual depth, while the beautifully aged, rounded edge emphasises its robust, handcrafted character. The 4.5 cm thick tabletop rests on a low, architectural base of folded black steel. Its restrained geometric form creates a compelling contrast with the expressive and organic surface above. Viewed from every angle, the table has the presence of a functional sculpture. Kingma produced each of his tables individually, selecting and arranging the materials by hand. No two examples are identical, making this a genuinely one-of-a-kind work. The original Kingma signature plaque remains embedded in the tabletop. Despite its compact proportions, the table has an extraordinary sense of monumentality. Its 80-kilogram top underlines the exceptional quality and permanence of its construction. A rare collector’s piece that works beautifully in a refined modernist, brutalist or contemporary interior. The table remains in good vintage condition, with visible patina and age-related wear consistent with its age and artisanal construction. These authentic traces contribute to its distinctive character and history. Dimensions Height: 38.5 cm Width: 80 cm Depth: 80 cm Top thickness: 4.5 cm Weight of tabletop: approximately 80 kg About the designer Paul Kingma (1931–2013) was a Dutch sculptor, mosaic artist and designer best known for his highly distinctive stone tables. Inspired by architecture, geology and ancient mosaic techniques, he combined materials such as slate, natural stone, brass and found objects into unique sculptural compositions. His tables are increasingly sought after by international collectors for their unmistakable materiality, brutalist character and exceptional craftsmanship.
