About the Item

A Chinese elm low kang table from circa 1900, with recessed panel top, elongated apron and dramatically scrolling feet. Originally conceived as a low table for use on a kang platform, this substantial antique Chinese table now makes an exceptionally handsome coffee or cocktail table. The rectangular top measures approximately 67.75 inches wide by 32 inches deep and is constructed with a broad frame surrounding a recessed paneled center. Below, the table is accented on all four sides with elongated rounded openwork motifs, lending a subtle architectural rhythm to the otherwise restrained design. The long apron is gently shaped along its lower edge before flowing into four substantial legs terminating in bold inward-scrolling feet. The warm brown finish allows the character and grain of the wood to remain visible, while the extremely low 13.5-inch profile emphasizes the table's broad, grounded proportions. Particularly appealing viewed from an angle, where the sculptural quality of the legs becomes prominent. With its generous scale and understated ornamentation, this circa 1900 Chinese kang table would make a distinctive low coffee table in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
