About the Item

A documented and beautifully proportioned coffee table by the legendary French design firm Maison Jansen, dating to circa 1950. The base is executed in its original white lacquer finish with gilt accents, showing age-appropriate wear that lends a softened, time-worn richness to the surface and enhances the table’s historical charm. The table is signed with the original maker’s mark and was published in Wright Auction’s Important Design catalog, June 2, 2009, attesting to its authenticity and significance. The top is a breathtaking slab of honed Portoro marble, a highly prized and increasingly rare Italian black marble laced with dramatic golden veining. Unlike polished marble, the honed finish here gives the surface a muted, velvety sheen that feels both sophisticated and grounded. The edges show minor chips and wear, all consistent with age and use, which only add to the marble’s character and tactile beauty. Portoro marble is among the most difficult stones to quarry due to its fragile veining, small available blocks, and limited extraction zone near La Spezia—making it both exclusive and storied. The unusually low height is reflective of mid-century European furniture scale, when designers favored pieces that promoted visual openness and conversational intimacy. Unlike many contemporary oversized coffee tables, this example enhances spatial flow, lending itself beautifully to low-slung seating arrangements or more intimate room layouts. Founded in 1880, Maison Jansen was the first truly global interior design firm, with offices in Paris, London, Buenos Aires, and New York. Their clientele included royalty, aristocracy, and cultural tastemakers—from the White House under Jacqueline Kennedy, to Coco Chanel, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and countless heads of state. Their style was both cosmopolitan and adaptive, seamlessly blending historical references with modern innovation. This table is a prime example of that philosophy—a neoclassical spirit rendered through a modernist lens, with materials and details that speak to both luxury and restraint. It would sit comfortably in a tailored modern interior, a Regency revival setting, or a contemporary space seeking a touch of patinated grandeur. A rare opportunity to acquire a signed, published, and materially exceptional piece by one of the most influential design houses of the 20th century—where history, craftsmanship, and timeless style converge.

19th Century Chinese Ming Style Wine Table or Small Altar Table

19th Century Chinese Ming Style Wine Table or Small Altar Table

Located in Kilmarnock, VA

A finely proportioned Chinese hardwood table dating to the 19th century, crafted in richly figured hongmu with a floating panel top framed by a mitered border. The restrained silhouette is elevated by elegant recessed legs and delicately shaped scroll-form spandrels, details rooted in the refined furniture traditions of the Qing dynasty. The warm reddish-brown wood displays beautiful natural grain variation throughout, with dark mineral streaking visible in the legs and apron adding depth and character to the surface. The top exhibits expected age-related shrinkage and wear, lending the piece an honest patina accumulated over generations of use. Originally intended as a wine table, incense table, or small altar table, its versatile scale translates effortlessly into contemporary interiors. It functions equally well as a console, lamp table, entry table, bedside table, or sculptural accent piece. The clean architectural lines and balanced proportions appeal to both traditional and modern sensibilities, making it particularly well suited to interiors inspired by the work of designers such as Axel Vervoordt, John Pawson, and Rose Tarlow, where age, material authenticity, and quiet craftsmanship are celebrated. A handsome and highly usable example of 19th-century Chinese hardwood furniture.
