About the Item

This monumental, museum-quality low table is a breathtaking masterpiece of Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetic, seamlessly marrying two of Japan’s most revered sacred timbers: Yakushima Cedar (Yaku-Sugi) and Japanese Zelkova (Keyaki). Originating in the early Showa period (circa 1930s) as a sculptural Keyaki root plinth (Netaku), it was later magnificently integrated with an antique Yaku-Sugi artisan’s workbench top to create an organic, one-of-a-kind low coffee table. The ultimate value of this table lies in the rare and poetic combination of its materials and their rich, lived-in history. The Top (Yakushima Cedar): The tabletop is fashioned from a vintage Yaku-Sugi artisan's workboard. Yaku-Sugi refers exclusively to ancient cedars from the mystical island of Yakushima, boasting a slow-growing, incredibly dense, and undulating grain pattern formed over a lifespan of more than 1,000 years. The surface reveals a mesmerizing, volcanic pattern of dense annual rings and a lustrous, dark oil-rich patina born from decades of artisanal use. The Base (Zelkova Root): The massive, sculptural base is a natural Keyaki (Zelkova) root block, prized since the early Showa era for its raw, earthen power. The hollowed, deeply grooved textures of the roots create a dramatic play of light and shadow, anchoring the piece with an undeniable sculptural gravity. The table stands in excellent, rock-solid antique condition with its structural integrity perfectly intact. The Yaku-Sugi top has a beautifully softened, undulating surface with natural indentations and faint historical marks from its former life as a workshop board, adding immense soul and narrative depth. The Keyaki root base is exceptionally dense and stable. It possesses a commanding, almost spiritual presence—evoking the mist-shrouded ancient forests of Japan. It serves as a stunning visual anchor for modern, brutalist, or minimalist luxury interiors. Yaku-Sugi is legally protected and logging has been strictly banned for decades, making authentic large slabs exceptionally rare and highly coveted worldwide. In Japanese high-end antique collecting, combining a sacred root base with a repurposed artisan workboard represents the height of Mitate—the sophisticated art of recontextualizing objects into functional high art. This table represents a beautiful lineage of domestic appreciation, passing through eras as a treasured functional sculpture. Type: Antique Mitate Low Table / Sculptural Root Coffee Table Period: Base: Early Showa Period (c. 1930s) / Top: Vintage Artisan Board Materials: Ancient Yakushima Cedar (Yaku-Sugi solid wood) and Solid Zelkova Wood (Keyaki root) Dimensions: [ Width. 77 × Depth. 62.5 × Height. 25.5 ] cm Display & Care Note: An absolute show-stopper for high-end residential or commercial spaces. Due to the rich natural oils of Yaku-Sugi, the table will continue to develop a deeper luster over time. Keep away from direct modern heating elements to preserve the ancient timber.
