This extendable drop-leaf coffee table was designed by Børge Mogensen for the Danish manufacture Fredericia Stolefabrik during the 1960s. Cataloge number 5362. The table was finished of teak with a warm, brown color. Teak wood is very durable, it comes from four types of teak trees. The high content of oily substances means that practically no water soaks into it. Due to the side wings, the table can be unfolded up to 160 cm wide, when the basic width is 80 cm. This is an example of Scandinavian functionalism. The part of paper label confirming the originality is located under the table top. Børge Mogensen was born in 1914, died in 1972. He was one of the pioneers who laid the foundations of Danish design as a furniture design culture. His ambition in life was to create durable and useful furniture that would enrich everyday life. Mogensen's ideal was to create furniture with restrained aesthetics. He believed that furniture should create a sense of calm and have a modest appearance that encourages people to live unpretentiously. In 1950, Mogensen opened a private design office, and shortly thereafter, in 1952, he began working with a young interior designer and entrepreneur Andreas Graversen, who later became the owner of Fredericia Furniture. Mogensen received the Eckersberg Medal in 1950 as well as C.F. The Hansen Medal, in 1972. In 1971, together with Andreas Graversen, they received the Danish Furniture Award for their contribution to the Danish furniture industry, in 1972 Mogensen was appointed Honorary Royal Designer. Examples of Mogensen's designs can be seen in leading design museums around the world. The Fredericia company was founded in 1911 as Fredericia Stolefabrik by entrepreneur NP Ravnsø, who successfully ran the venture until his death in 1936. Right from the start, Ravnsø wanted his company to be known for its extremely high quality and employed only the most skilled craftsmen during his tenure. This made Fredericia Stolefabrik known for high-quality furniture in a variety of styles. Fredericia's first luxury collection was based on the methodologies fashionable in Denmark in the 1920s, namely antique furniture in Central European and English styles. Fredericia received the exclusive rights to produce and distribute the chair collection under the German brand Thonet in Scandinavia. Under the leadership of Børge Mogensen, Danish Coop FDB initiated a furniture program aimed at renewing the Danish furniture culture and creating modern, functional and useful furniture. The table is in original vintage condition. It has minor scratches related to age and use. The colors of the products shown in the photos may differ slightly from the actual ones. Among the great mid-20th century Danish furniture designers, Børge Mogensen distinguished himself with his faith to traditional values of craftsmanship and honesty of materials.

While peers such as Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl and Arne Jacobsen designed some of the most striking and now iconic furnishings of the era, Mogensen focused on making chairs, sofas and other pieces that were simple, durable and comfortable — and in the long run perhaps more useful and better loved.

Mogensen studied under and later worked for Kaare Klint, a master cabinetmaker whose chief tenets were quality of construction and simplicity of line. Klint was a classicist, who believed that furniture forms should evolve from those of historical models. So, too, in his way was Mogensen, as two of his best-known earlier pieces attest.

His 1945 Spokeback sofa, with hinged arms that can be lowered to facilitate lounging, is a reinterpretation of the venerable Knole settee. With the oval silhouette of its plywood backrest and waterdrop-shaped cutouts, Mogensen’s Shell chair, designed in 1949, can be seen as a novel take on early 19th-century Empire side chairs.

Yet Mogensen shared the aesthetical sensibilities of his most forward-looking colleagues. His cabinets deploy the same spare geometries and lushly figured woods as those of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and his disciple Florence Knoll, the chief difference being that Mies and Knoll used chrome steel for the frames and legs of their pieces. The brawny oak frames and slung leather seats and backrests of Mogensen’s Hunting chair (1950) and Spanish chair (1958) display the same hefty construction and appreciation of natural materials seen in the work of Charlotte Perriand and Sergio Rodrigues.

Mogensen designed for function more than sculptural effect. While his chairs may not be the first pieces in a décor to draw the eye, they are often the first to draw in those looking for a comfortable seat.
