About the Item

This is an extraordinary console in gilded wood with stem shaped like a vine plant with leaves and bunches of grapes, supporting a carved wooden top painted in imitation of marble. This rare piece hails from the Mid-17th Century and epitomizes the high level of craftsmanship of Lombard cabinetmakers. This piece is probably coming out from the properties of the noble Borromeo family, Milan, Italy. This refined console displays an intricate design to imitate the vine plant and showcases exquisite craftsmanship through meticulously carved depictions of the bunches of grapes and the leaves, lending the piece a captivating decorative charm. The naturalistic model with the vine-shaped support leg derives from some designs for furniture, the work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598/1680) and his closest collaborator Johann Paul Schor, known as Gian Paolo Tedesco, (1615/ 1674), created in the Mid-17th Century for the greatest aristocratic families in Europe. These models had considerable success in the late Baroque period. In particular, this console clearly derives from two designs for tables with a tree trunk preserved in the Tessin Fund of the National Museum in Stockholm. Referring bibliography: A. Gonzàles-Palacios, Il tempio del gusto, Roma ed il Regno delle Due Sicilie, Milano, 1984, vol. I, p. 91, vol.
