About the Item

A refined and elegant 19th-century writing desk, crafted in solid beechwood and retaining its original green gilt-tooled leather writing surface. The clean, understated lines and well-balanced proportions make this desk a versatile piece, suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. The desk features three drawers across the front, each fitted with its original escutcheon and working lock. The rear is finished with matching dummy drawers (false drawer fronts), allowing the desk to stand freely in the centre of a room while maintaining an attractive appearance from every angle. A particularly practical feature is the pair of pull-out writing slides, one concealed beneath each end of the top, providing additional working space when required. The original leather top is beautifully decorated with delicate gilt tooling and a central lozenge motif, displaying the authentic patina expected from over a century of careful use. Natural wear, light marks, scratches and age-related spotting all contribute to its genuine antique character without detracting from its functionality or charm. The timber appears to be solid beechwood, a material frequently used for quality French provincial and country furniture of the 19th-century, valued for its strength, fine grain and warm honey-brown colour.
