About the Item

Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007) was one of the most influential and provocative figures in 20th-century design. Trained as an architect, he moved fluidly between architecture, industrial design, and ceramics, consistently challenging the idea that objects should be purely functional or neutral. His work is known for its bold colors, playful geometry, and emotional resonance. Sottsass gained international recognition through his collaboration with Olivetti, most notably with the iconic Valentine typewriter, which reimagined an everyday object as something vibrant and personal. In 1981, he founded the Memphis Group, a movement that rejected modernist austerity in favor of expressive, unconventional forms and materials. Pieces like the Carlton bookcase became symbols of this radical approach. Throughout his career, Sottsass emphasized design as a cultural and emotional experience rather than just a technical solution, leaving a lasting impact on contemporary design and visual culture.
