About the Item

This Berlin Deko Bureau-Plat represents the evolution of women's writing furniture from the private intimacy of the boudoir to the representational space of the salon. Designed as a workspace for visibility rather than seclusion - reflecting the social changes of the late 1920s - the design interprets rococo principles through an expressionist lens: the silhouette is animated by sculptural cabriole legs and a recessed center drawer. The ornamentation is reduced to the essential articulation of surfaces and curves, avoiding any historicist pastiche. A prominent detail is the overlapping of the doors toward the center, which creates the recess of the center drawer. The play of light and shade on this private façade is very rococo, while the front of the desk facing the visitor is a straight plane with a cut-out arch. The interior is in maple and the exterior is finished in RAL 1017 Saffron Yellow - a bright, warm tone that evokes both sacred dye and modernist clarity. The color conforms to the historic RAL standard, bridging the ancient opulence of real saffron pigment with the precision of early industrial color systems. In the context of Weimar-era design, this hue was not merely decorative - it signaled a new belief in color as an expressive, functional and material truth. Few colors speak so vividly of both rarity and rationality. Saffron projects vibrancy, sophistication and intellectual vitality. It echoes the expressive color language of Berlin interiors of the late 1920s, where color was used structurally rather than decoratively. A prime example of Expressionist Rococo in Berlin Deko: neither a revival of tradition nor a precursor to Bauhaus functionalism, but an independent modernist language rooted in the theatricality, intensity and abstraction of the period.
