About the Item

This French faux bamboo writing table from the 19th century features a beautifully decorative form with a warm honey-toned frame, black painted panels, and a red painted leather writing surface. The table is designed with faux bamboo legs and stretchers, giving it the light, exoticized character associated with late 19th-century French bamboo and Japonisme-inspired furniture. The rectangular top is inset with a red leather writing surface framed by a black painted border decorated with floral and foliate motifs. The writing surface has a gilt tooled border, giving the piece a practical desk quality while maintaining a decorative, layered appearance. Below the top is a single drawer with painted or lacquered floral decoration and two round pulls. The faux bamboo frame continues around the apron and legs, with arched side supports adding structure and visual movement.
