About the Item

A beautifull and stylised, small white desk clearly inspired by the space odyssey period, Modernist, Space-Age, Seventies, cream white laquered wood body with sixties curved angles, including 6 drawers with frosten aluminium finishes, mounted on 2 thin star chromed metal legs, to be attributed, France 1960. The Welle desk chair on some pictures is also on sale, please see our other sales! 1970s Space Age Desk — White Lacquer and Chrome A spectacular 1970s Space Age desk, whose bold, futuristic design perfectly embodies the period’s fascination with aerodynamic forms, lacquered surfaces, and polished chrome. The desk is distinguished by its highly graphic suspended architectural structure: two side pedestals, each fitted with three drawers, frame a generous central kneehole, while the top and sides form a continuous shell with beautifully rounded corners. This almost monolithic silhouette is contrasted by two elegant chrome-plated metal supports with cylindrical stems and star-shaped bases, giving the piece a striking impression of lightness. The white surfaces, punctuated by six cylindrical metal handles, emphasize the rigorous geometry of the design. The combination of pale lacquer, softly curved lines, and gleaming chrome immediately places this desk within the futuristic aesthetic that defined international design at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. Its formal vocabulary recalls the work of major designers associated with the Space Age era, particularly Joe Colombo, with his compact and highly functional architectural furniture, as well as Raymond Loewy for the aerodynamic fluidity of its lines, Pierre Paulin for his sculptural approach to volume, and Eero Aarnio for the enveloping forms characteristic of 1960s and 1970s futurism. Its spirit can also be related to certain designs by Giotto Stoppino and to the experimental furniture developed around Kartell and the leading Italian manufacturers of the period. Both a functional desk and a sculptural piece of furniture, it has a remarkable architectural presence. Its carefully structured design, symmetry, and chrome-plated pedestal bases make it equally at home in a contemporary interior or in a collection devoted to important 1960s and 1970s design. A highly decorative piece, emblematic of an era when furniture expressed an optimistic vision of the interiors of the future.
