About the Item

Pierre Jeanneret (1896–1967) was a Swiss architect and designer whose work became closely associated with the creation of Chandigarh in the 1950s. As a key collaborator and cousin of Le Corbusier, Jeanneret moved to India to help realize the ambitious vision of a modern capital city following independence. Beyond supervising major architectural works, he designed a wide range of furniture specifically for government offices, educational institutions, and residences in Chandigarh. His furniture reflected modernist ideals—clarity of structure, honest materials, and functional design—while responding to local craftsmanship and climate. The Pigeonhole Desk is one of Jeanneret’s most recognizable furniture designs. Created for administrative offices, it features a series of open storage compartments (or “pigeonholes”) arranged above or within a simple, rectilinear frame. Typically constructed from solid teak, the desk emphasizes durability and practicality, with clean lines and minimal ornamentation. The open cubbies allowed for efficient organization of documents, aligning with the needs of bureaucratic workspaces. Today, the Pigeonhole Desk is admired for its architectural presence and timeless utility, embodying Jeanneret’s ability to merge functionality with refined modernist aesthetics.
