About the Item

J.A.D.A Galerie present: French workshop, extending dining table, oak, France, 1940s. The base is where the design speaks. Two solid half moon runners sit flat on the floor, each cut from a single thick section of oak, and along the outer edge of each one a band of carving runs from the ground to the shoulder. The vocabulary is abstract and entirely geometric: concentric circles, lozenges set inside squares, short arcs, and narrow fluted bands stacked one above the other. The cutting is shallow and graphic, drawn rather than modelled, and it repeats on the central stretcher that ties the two runners together. Two flat uprights rise from the runners to carry the top, and where each upright meets its runner a small fluted block marks the junction. The whole base is built from plain rectangular sections, so the carved bands read as the only ornament against an otherwise severe frame. The top is rectangular with a moulded surround, and the field inside it is laid out in eight compartments, the boards set in a regular parquetry so the grain changes direction from one panel to the next. Two draw leaves are housed at either end and pull out to extend the table for larger numbers, then slide back under the top when not needed. The oak is solid throughout and has been brought back to a pale, dry, open grained surface. The ray fleck reads across the top and along the runners, and the timber carries the light without any gloss. French workshops of the nineteen forties worked oak in exactly this way, reducing the frame to plain volumes and concentrating all the drawing into narrow carved bands. On a dining table the result sits low and quiet under the eye, and the base clears the floor for chairs on all four sides. Condition is good, with wear consistent with age and use. Measurements: W 138 cm x D 89 cm x H 75 cm, closed.
