About the Item

The “Chelsea” extendable dining table was designed by Vittorio Introini and produced by Saporiti Italia during the 1960s. In its closed configuration, the lacquered wood table has a compact circular form. When extended, it becomes an oval dining surface measuring 165.5 cm in length. Brass detailing introduces a material contrast while reinforcing the geometry of the design. The table reflects Introini’s approach to furniture through linear forms, geometric organisation and the combination of traditional materials with modern production. His collaboration with Saporiti Italia placed this work within the development of postwar Italian modern design, when adaptable furniture and industrial methods were increasingly incorporated into domestic interiors. Founded in 1950 by Sergio Saporiti, Saporiti Italia became known for collaborations with architects and designers exploring new forms, materials and construction methods. The Chelsea table demonstrates that approach through its transition between two distinct configurations without losing its formal coherence. Its circular closed form allows it to function in a smaller dining area or as a centre table. Extended, it provides a larger dining surface while retaining the proportions and material continuity of the original design.
