About the Item

An ode to balance and form, the ‘Lunario’ table by Cini Boeri for Knoll, designed in the 1970s, embodies the designer’s mastery of material tension and minimalist poise. This edition features a thick, oval glass top that appears to float, cantilevered above a chromed steel base with an elliptical footprint. The base, internally weighted, anchors the composition, allowing the glass to project outward in a gesture of effortless engineering. At just under five feet wide, the Lunario functions equally well as a desk or dining table. A rare and iconic example of Boeri’s work for Knoll, the Lunario remains a collectible statement of Italian modernism. Cini Boeri (1924–2020), born Maria Cristina Mariani Dameno, was a pioneering Italian architect and designer who grew up in Milan and earned her architecture degree from the Polytechnic University in 1951—one of only three women to graduate that year. After early work with Gio Ponti and a decade-long collaboration with Marco Zanuso, she opened her own studio in 1963, focusing on architecture, interiors, and industrial design. Her work with companies like Knoll, Arflex, Artemide, and Rosenthal helped shape postwar Italian design, with pieces like the “Strips” sofa system earning the Compasso d’Oro in 1979. Boeri also taught at the Politecnico and received numerous lifetime honors, including the Grande Ufficiale Ordine al Merito and Milan’s Ambrogino d’Oro. Condition: This table remains in very good vintage condition. The glass top is affixed to the base and shows small edge chips that have been carefully smoothed by our restoration team, as shown in photos, resulting in a clean and stable finish. The chromed steel base retains a soft, age-appropriate patina with light surface wear consistent with use and time. The structure is solid and presents beautifully overall.
